Day One will end 72 hours from this posting; cast final votes and stop talking before then and we'll move into the night cycle. YOU ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT NIGHT ACTIONS IN ADVANCE, but night will last 48 hours. Make sure you are familiar with general rule updates from the OOC thread. Play to your current win condition. You are not encouraged to roleplay beyond your character-themed mechanical traits. You are encouraged to keep us informed of what's going on, so that we may laugh at your misery.

OH NO. DEATH. DEATH IS BAD, RIGHT? I DON'T HAVE THAT BACKWARDS? DEATH IS THE BAD ONE. Lutan Mehaas, Academy student and promising wizard/kama, has been found dead! WHAT IF WHOEVER KILLED HER KILLS AGAIN? YOU'D BETTER GET THEM FIRST. THAT CAN'T POSSIBLY ESCALATE THE SITUATION UNTIL PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY IS DEAD, CAN IT?

Welp.

I think the general consensus last time was that going No Lynch on the first day did nobody any good, and I don't know how to do any fancy shit with publicly certified random numbers, so I rolled a random number from 1 to 19 inclusive on random.org and got 18. That's Tulip. If anyone has a better methodology to offer, I'm all ears.

I'm a bit leery of killing someone randomly on the first day because when we considered doing this during the last game we almost killed the Bell and the only reason we didn't was because she was confused about the wording of her mod PM. ETA: And if we had killed the Bell 50/50 chance we would have lost the game.

(Also I feel really bad about killing someone before they get to do anything, especially Tulip because they got murdered so early last time, but, like, caring about peoples' feelings is probably not Good Mafia Strategy, I guess).

It might be a good idea for everyone to semi-randomly vote each other and see how people react. This wouldn't be voting to try to kill anyone yet (so let's not all pile on anyone in particular), just trying to get reactions out of people. We could start by voting for baseless reasons and then see if we can find something meatier to vote someone based on.

Vote: wolffreak for not having an avatar yet (please upload one it'll make it easier to distinguish you!)

edit: I also think we should spend the entire first day (almost all 72 hours of it) interacting with each other as much as possible to get to know each other.

I mean, I'm ok-ish with random numbers except I would much rather this be a random number generator that is visible to all so that we don't, say, lie about what our random numbers generate. I have no way to verify that you didn't pick tulip to kill on purpose and lied about getting a random number because you know something about tulip and want them dead. Not saying you did that, you probably didn't, but verification is important. I'm not sure how to do that exactly but I know BSS was doing it last game.

And yes we should totally lynch someone today, especially since we're odd instead of even this time. I think that's the right choice, I need to think about it.

We can also wait a little while before resorting to random number generators, and see what people have to say, there may be useful things to learn about each other. We can resort to random as a last resort if necessary and think it's a good idea.

Why do I have a suspicion that semi-random free-for-all voting is going to end up piling on someone by quasi-accident?

Anyway, I'm all in favour of verified random voting, I just don't know how to do it. Please, someone, come up with a comprehensible, clear, and obvious way to do verified random voting. The thing last game with linking to a page on random.org was incomprehensible, unclear, and non-obvious to me as a spectator, but maybe now that I'm actually playing someone can explain it to me in a way that makes sense.

I _think_ the way it worked is that you could link to a page and use the date as a seed and the random number wouldn't be available until the date happened, which works as a random number generator as long as you don't know how their random number generation works.

But we should be talking to people and not worrying about this yet, I think.

Yeah, all things considered I'd be okay with killing someone on the first day, I just don't think "totally randomly" is the right way to do that. However, I also don't have a good alternative, so I'll vote for the random person if I must.

Shoal: I apologize for not having an avatar yet, I am having difficulties uploading one. I'll get on that. If I can't figure it out maybe I can just be distinguishable as That One Chick With No Avatar?

I think semi-random may end up piling on someone, but we can keep unofficial vote counts and if it starts getting too high on one person we can collectively decide to hold off.

If I understood the rules correctly, day 1 will not end early even if all of us are sheeping the RNG against tulip (or whoever), so even if we do end up piling on somebody, we will have time to unpile and move into a different formation of piles.

I think we should stop semi-random voting after about 24 hours (or sooner if someone is particularly sketchy though we should be careful not to policy lynch andais on the first day just because he's the joker in real life) and then start semi-seriously voting based on things people say. If we focus on trying to get to know each other, we can do better than random chance.

@anthusiasm: if you tell us what kind of avatar you're looking for, like "a picture of a duck" or whatever, people could try to find you one that meets the size requirements? The image has to be fairly small, both in terms of how much space it takes up on the screen and in terms of how many kilobytes it is. (I'm guessing that's the part you're having trouble with)

Yeah, back in the last mafia game they asked me to have an avatar and it was such a pain to find one that fit. All the pictures I liked were too big so I settled on this nondescript black circle that doesn't represent me or my interests in any way.
