Is that what you were exclaiming about?

Yes! I think the phrase must have come up before in all this time but this was the first time I noticed the pun. :D :D :D

DanielH wrote:Mail daemons exist today. A daemon is a computer program running in the background; there are usually many per computer, like antivirus, some network management, and a bunch of other things. A mail daemon is there to handle email.

I don’t know whether this is related to Shoal’s reaction. I feel like it isn’t, but I can’t think what else it would be.

an added note that it's not your personal computer that has a mail daemon usually but the server that hosts your email has it: if you email someone, then the mailer daemon on the gmail server or the hotmail server or whatever processes the mail and figures out who should receive it. and if you send an email to an email address that doesn't exist, you get a reply from the mail daemon to tell you they've tried a bunch of times and are now giving up.

For example if you try to write a fairy in hell:
From: "XoxoMacalaurëXoXo Mailer Daemon" <mailer-daemon@hell.circle>
To: Bright
Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
Date: this morning

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of
its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es)
failed:

<Titania@hell.circle>:
SMTP error from remote server for RCPT TO command, host: [hell.circle] ([666.444.222]) reason: 550 5.1.1 <Titania@hell.circle>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table

This is even better since I've spent the evening reading Unsong.

Pfffff <3 well now I want to know the context!

Context was "who edits the wiki", (with a further context of vague discussion of a list of minor characters sorted by thread so people could look up whether they already knew who someone was).

Further quote:
<Moriwen> It's kind of like playing D&D if you decided that the whole dice-rolling thing was boring and the rules were mostly there to have your characters exploit in the process of taking over the world

(explaining glowfic)

The glowfic characters are nowhere close to the Harry Potter and the Natural 20 levels. Otherwise Stella would never have left Milliways until Jane showed up.

Look, I got ahold of the principle "do not lose access to Milliways" EVENTUALLY. That's how you get Room of Requirement.

Yes, it’s how you get RoR and Two Hells. A Bell only thinks of that in desperate situations, like if they’re Sad Cam or Shell Bell (who couldn’t actually succeed at it). The others usually had the (correct) expectation that they’d get another door, and/or aren’t well positioned to take advantage. If you think you’ll be back there’s much less reason to not leave.

Milo would have seen the situation and decided to run up an arbitrarily high tab, which most Bells aren’t willing to do.
