Rereading Incandescence, and I am curious: how much would it cost a company to get Isabella to make portals and send a fiberoptic or copper cable through them? There are many financial institutions who would basically pay a monthly blank check between the right cities (Chicago, New York, London, and whatever other big trading cities there are). It would probably have make the initial money faster than the transportation industry, and for fewer portals.
It’s a good thing she didn’t take any bank investment, because (among all the other reasons) they would have jumped on that idea whether she wanted to do it or not. And she might not, consumer portals actually help people in the mean time while this would just be the next step in the low-latency arms race among financial institutions.
