It is! Out to save the world and everything.

I apologize for the profusion of lilacs; this story requires a lot of NPCs. I'm attempting to scrounge up at least an icon per person now.

It's based in the Kushiel universe, but I can info-dump the necessary backstory, or just "what we changed from the books", somewhere if people are curious. (Or both, that too.)

Okay, here goes XD so there's sorta historical/political backstory and religious backstory but religion's not as relevant yet. Starting with geopolitical stuff, then.

Kushiel's on an alternate Earth. It's pretty alternate. Terre D'Ange is the story where this is all set; it's where France would be, and is in many ways French. Similarly, Aragonia is Spain, Caerdicca Unitas is Italy, Khebbel-im-Akkad is roughly Persia, Alba is England, Eire is Ireland, Skaldia is Germany, and there's a bunch more. If picturing maps, just use Europe; the geography isn't changed.

Terre D'Ange is split into seven provinces: Kusheth, Eisande, Namarre, Camlach, Azzalle, Siovale, and L'Agnace. Terre D'Ange is ruled in its entirety by the Courcel family, currently Ganelon de la Courcel. He is old and not doing too well. His heir is his granddaughter Ysandre; Ysandre's father Rolande de la Courcel died in the last large battle against the Skaldi, who perioidically raid Terre D'Ange. Ysandre's mother was Isabel L'Envers, sister to Duc Barquiel L'Envers; she was poisoned by Dominic and Therese Stregazza.

Ganelon also had a sister, Lyonette, who married Duc Marc de Trevalion of Azzalle. She and her son Baudoin were just recently convicted of treason and executed, for conspiring with Foclaidha of Alba to take the throne by force. Marc and their daughter Bernadette were exiled, for knowing of the plot without not getting involved. The plot was discovered and thwarted by Duc Isidore D'Aiglemort of Camlach and Lady Melisande Shahrizai, who are now considered heroes.

Meanwhile in Alba, the old king died quite a while ago. Traditionally in Alba, inheritance is via the female line, so the children of a king do not inherit; the throne goes instead to the sons of his sisters. However, the old king's wife Foclaidha was as scheming as Lyonette de Trevalion (if a tiny bit more effective) and has managed to get her son Maelcon on the throne instead of the actual heir, the king's nephew Drustan. Drustan has sought refuge among the Dalriada, a group of Eirans on the west coast of Alba.

Skaldi is... fairly Viking like. People live in tribes, raid villages in Terre D'Ange regularly, and are considered fierce warriors. They occasionally attack in larger groups, most recently the Battle of Three Princes where Rolande de la Courcel died, but they haven't been thought a real threat mainly because they are completely disorganized and cannot really rally together. However, not long ago a man calling himself King Waldemar Selig of Skaldia has popped up.

The reason the Skaldi haven't conquered Terre D'Ange by sea is a set of three small islands in what we call the English Channel. The islands, called the Three Sisters, hold the man known as the Master of the Straits. Little is known about him, but he is a mystical figure who somehow controls the northern waters and all its weather; crossings between Alba and Terre D'Ange can be dangerously uncertain, and the Skaldi cannot manage it at all.

Religion!

The way their story goes: Yeshua ben Yosef (their version of Jesus) is the son of the One God. After being crucified by the Tiberians (Romans), his blood mixes with the tears of the Magdalene and the dirt of Mother Earth to bring forth a child, Blessed Elua. Grieving for the death of his son, God turns his face away from Elua. Elua leaves to wander the earth, and is joined by eight angels who disapprove of God's neglect of his grandson: Kushiel, Naamah, Anael, Azza, Shemhazai, Camael, Eisheth, and Cassiel. Skipping some history, eventually they found Terre D'Ange, were welcomed by the people there, and settled there. Each of Elua's Companions settled a province (Kushiel in Kusheth, for example), but Elua wandered, only remaining in the City of Elua, now the capitol. Eventually God offered to take them all to Heaven, but Elua refused, cutting his hand to show his blood and saying a "bloodless heaven was not for him." So God and Earth made a second Terre D'Ange, the 'true one', which is the D'Angeline heaven, and there Elua and his Companions have gone.

The core tenet of their faith is "Love as thou wilt", with all the, hm, sexual liberation implied. All the people are beautiful, because they are all descended from angels; Elua's Companions (with the exception of Cassiel) took his command fairly seriously :P Nowadays, entering the service of Naamah involves what we would consider prostitution, but is there considered religious devotion. Rape is not just a crime, it's literally heresy, and is almost unheard of. The best known servants of Naamah are those in the Court of Night-Blooming Flowers, known as the Night Court, in the City of Elua. It is divided into Thirteen Houses, each of which emphasizes a different aspect of love: fragility, dignity, perfection, mysticism, merriment, creativity, submission, dominance, soothing, pleasure, devotion modesty and wealth. Adepts are dedicated at thirteen and begin to take patrons at sixteen; their fees go to their House, but if they are tipped- it's called a "patron-gift"- that goes to the adept themselves, and it is used towards their marque. Marques are what the adept owes their house for raising them, symbolized as a tattoo on their back paid for by their patron-gifts; once the tattoo is complete, the adept has repaid their debt and can do whatever they wish. Retire, if they want, or marry, or continue to serve Naamah keeping their fees for themselves.

Elua is a D'Angeline god; the other countries have their own traditions. In various places there are Yeshuites- culturally very similar to our historical Jews, but who are religiously more Christian in that they worship Yeshua and Adonai but do not accept Elua as Yeshua's son. They have an affilitation for the followers of Cassiel, a military order known as the Cassiline Brothers, because Cassiel alone among Elua's Companions "never broke faith with the One God, only turned his face from him in sorrow" (meaning despite abandoning God to follow Elua, he remained celibate). Skaldia holds Norse-style traditions, and often talk of the Allfather, an Odin variant; Albans call themselves "Earth's oldest children" and have their own druidic-style faith.

There is probably more but I am reasonably info-dumped for now XD

:D :D :D Kushielfic :D

I am slightly surprised that Melisande is not a Libby, but I suppose that would make the main conflict between two Purple characters and that would be less fun to RP. So far, I like Sarafiel a lot and am pleased by how adept both of you are at writing in flowery D'Angeline style. Also Barquiel and Ysandre were facecast beautifully :D

*crosses fingers for an anguisset/te Joker to show up eventually*
